"Faded glory"
14 Sep 2015

"This hotel has a lot going for it, especially in terms of the setting and atmosphere. It is therefore sad that small details are neglected, since small details are what make a good experience great. The general feel is of neglect and faded glory. The food is good and the service friendly, but the cobwebs, dust and tatty finishes (in places) ensure that we will not return. Not good value for money. If you charge R2500 per night, bed and breakfast only, you'd better ensure that everything is spotless and in perfect working order."

"Trading on its former glory"

"The staff and duty manager were great, and trying to do the best that they can but the lodge is under resourced and badly in need of maintenance and an upgrade. We waited an hour for soup and salad starters which were inedible, main courses not much better. Breakfast was also not great, would have preferred a buffet. Our room (garden suite 9) was clean but small and tired looking, couldn't close the curtains at night as they didn't fit, there was a light bulb out in the bathroom, no bedside/reading lamps and our phone didn't work. The setting is lovely but the gardens are also overgrown and in need of attention. Certainly didn't feel that it was worth +R2000 a night."

"Friendly staff and a great location. I felt they were lacking detail in their application. The rate does not include breakfast."

"This is still a lovely hotel but a bit run down in some cases. The food is really good with nice choices and the staff and management great."

"Lovely weekend away at Critchley Hackle; in some ways I found it more welcoming than other establishments. Staff friendly and helpful and nice to find a place of this calibre that is welcoming of kids."
