How to Plan a Surprise Romantic Getaway

Daily life tends to interfere with the amount of romantic time we have to spend with our partners. A surprise romantic getaway may be just the thing to add some anticipation, excitement, and romance back into a relationship.

Choose the date(s).

You need to make sure your partner won’t have anything planned during that time. There are a few ways to go about securing their time without ruining the surprise. For one, you can plan something else with your mate, preferably something routine. Or, ask your mate’s relative or friend to plan something with them for that time.

Find a place that will hold special meaning for your partner, since you’re planning a surprise just for him or her.

When choosing your lodging, take into account your partner’s preferences, such as “romance of the big city” vs. “secluded in nature”. Also consider whether your partner prefers small intimate lodgings like B&Bs or cottages, or larger accommodations with lots of amenities such as hotels and resorts. You can also choose a location that’s meaningful in some way. For example, you could choose a place where you had your first kiss, or the city where you proposed, or a place your partner has always dreamed of visiting but hasn’t yet had the chance.

Figure out how to get the reservation confirmation without your partner intercepting it.

Provide your personal cell phone number, email address, or even work address for any reservation confirmations or tickets. This will help to prevent your partner from prematurely finding out about your surprise. Let the hotel or resort know that you are planning a surprise so that they do not inadvertently give it away.

Take care of the logistics.

Make sure you both have valid passports, arrange for child-care and/or pet-sitting, house-sitting arrangements, mail pick-up, and other details. Pack a few special things you know your partner will enjoy; their favorite warm beverage, a nice bottle of wine, massage oil for the foot & hand massage you’ll give them later, their favorite traveling music, a book about the place you’re going to present to them once you’ve arrived, etc.

Surprise your partner, giving them enough time to pack.

(Or, you could pack for them, but most people prefer to do it themselves.) You could also tell them what they need to bring such as “warm clothes, hiking boots, sunblock and a nice outfit for an evening out”. That way they get to choose their clothing but it will still be a surprise. A bouquet of flowers when revealing the surprise is a nice touch.

Optional:

Keep the destination a secret until you get there. Take a circuitous route to the destination and enjoy the traveling adventure along the way. Employ blindfolds and headphones so that when you get there, your significant other get the full effect of the surprise!

Making the Most of a Romantic Getaway

Create an unforgettable hotel stay with a little advance planning.

Planning a romantic getaway? Whether it’s a honeymoon or your 50th anniversary, you’ll want to make it as special as possible. Many hotels and resorts expect you to visit during special occasions, and can supply your trip with the trimmings that will make it extra special. Usually it’s as simple as asking! Read on for tips to make your romantic trip memorable.

When you book your stay, ask about special romance packages or rates. Many hotels and getaways offer package deals that include extras such as relaxing spa services or flowers in your room. Booking a romantic package can take care of many of the little “extras” that make your trip special, while saving you time and money.

If you are booking your stay in honor of a special occasion, let the hotel staff know. Tell them what event you are celebrating in advance (when you book and confirm) and when you check in. Many places will surprise you with special service or gifts to help you celebrate. For example, on a honeymoon stay the manager sent a signed card and a complimentary CD. The CD was a collection of music from the resort’s dancing fountains, a romantic favorite of ours throughout the trip. The CD was the perfect keepsake reminder of our stay.

Plan a unique event during your stay. Dinner and dancing is always a classic, but go the extra mile to find something interesting and unique to try. Often the hotel’s concierge can suggest activities close to the hotel, or you can look online for suggestions. Getting away from the crowds is a treat, so try plan for some quiet time.

Book the right room for your trip. This might be an area you usually scrimp on, since you’re not spending that much time in the room. But on a romantic getaway, the right room can set the mood. Ask about upgrades before you go. Consider a suite; many add extras like fireplaces, bathtubs-for-two and cozy seating areas. One sexy trend is the bathtub in the bedroom.

Don’t forget to take a picture to remember the event. Often the hotel will have wandering photographers or waitstaff with access to cameras, but it’s a good idea to bring along your own camera. Ask a staff member to take a snapshot. It will make a great keepsake of your special occasion, long after you’ve returned home.
